'22 SE 4Motion, 15K miles; Low coolant indication came on several months ago. The dealer topped off the expansion tank reservoir (they said it was a nominal amount) and asked us to monitor it. The comment was made "it is not out of the question the coolant level was low from the factory".

The same indicator came on again several days ago. The coolant level in the tank was just below the low level marking. There has been no external evidence of product leakage so far. A check of the oil dip stick does not show signs of an internal leak at this time ( i.e. no coolant bubbles on the dip stick) An appointment was made and the car was dropped off at the dealer this afternoon. The Service Advisor assigned to us initially gave me the "evaporation" explanation saying "in the last ten plus years EPA mandates have lead to a change in the make up of the coolant product and it is now +/- 50% water and, therefore, it is not unusual for the cooling system to be topped off on a semi-regular basis for many cars". I noticed a small amount of coolant residue evident when the tank cap is removed. As to whether this is evidence of evaporation is another question. It may have resulted from the first refill attempt. I will let you know what we hear.

You should have topped if off yourself with pure Pentosin. This is the only way to tell as it evaporates slower. F the EPA. this is what I did. My light came on at around 12,500mi I added about 300ml?? of Pentosin. It's been fine since and still at the top line.

The coolant leak test is back. Score another failure of the head gasket or so it seems. The dealership is to replace the gasket and we will once again be back on hall monitor duty. Great…

“This is a new issue” according to our Service Advisor. We are only their second customer to confront this situation. Parts have been ordered. Stay tuned America.

I prefer to NOT let them touch mine, hasnt come back on after adding a cup of water and ill trade it in if it continues to come back. Cant deal with the hassle of dealing with a Dealership, I buy a new car with the thought it will NEVER go back to the Dealership and that is my intention with this one too

I certainly understand. I would never buy anything else except a Honda/Acura, but my daughter didn't want to listen and we have this. First the back brake issue, now this. I've been reading the post and this may be a recall issue with the engine gasket.

Suspect the engine coolant is leaking. purchased Taos 2022 high line on 31dec2021(Canada) and I had this 'Engine coolant level low warning light is on dashboard. VW service tech filled up the coolant on July2022. But again on 7sep2022, coolant level low light showed up. next day, drove into service centre and found coolant level is low. Filled up the coolant and I am going to drop off the car at VW service tomorrow for diagnosis. Suspect the engine coolant leakage issue. Does anyone have this issue? Please share. 14000 KM into my Taos, i am not a happy customer. I got one recall and visited service centre three times. started to worry about reliability. regards, Nas
This happed with my 2019 VW Atlas with 70,000 miles on it. Was told it was a bad water pump causing the issue. Good news was it was all covered under warranty. No cost to be to be repaired.

If this car has taught me anything it's probably no more VW's
But to be fair i have to mention my low coolant light never went back on and i put thousands of miles on it since I added a cup. I shut off the Air Bag Light myself and thats stayed off, 20,000 miles now and it really has been very good to me, gets great MPG's, has proved to be an excellent road car, and no visits to the dealership since i bought it....

Update on 2022 Taos.
Bought mine December 2021 - two weeks in I had an oil leak. The turbo return line needed replacing. This took 10 weeks as parts were not available. August 2023 I had a low coolant issue. Cylinder head gasket was blown and had to be replaced. Another 2 weeks in a loaner vehicle while waiting for parts. I picked up my repaired vehicle on August 31 but now, as of yesterday (September 3) I have another major oil leak. I have lost all faith in my Taos and feel forced to buy a new, reliable vehicle. I will be contacting Volkswagen Customer Care to see what they can do for me.

Ours is a Novmber 2021 production car bought December 2021. It was at the dealer 3 1/2 months this year (May to August) waiting for parts and the tools to install them. This was all related to the coolant leak. They replaced the head gasket and also the cylinder head. As I understand what the technician said, the cylinder head design, which has the exhaust manifold integrated, accumulates carbon along the manifold side and by around 30K km (20K miles) the accumulation can cause the head to warp and thus the head gasket to leak on the firewall side of the engine. VW has redesigned the cylinder head and that was a big part of the delay apparently. But we had a new Tiguan as a loaner so the delay was no major inconvenience. I certainly hope the new head design solves the problem. The SA thought this may be a recall or a TSB at some point. For some reason, they've only seen this on the Taos and not the Jetta which uses the same engine.

Thanks for this message. I'm happy to hear the cylinder head has a new design. I was not able to get an answer to that question when I asked at my dealership. I am curious to find out the cause of my recent oil leak. I am hoping it is an easy fix - maybe something was not tightened enough after replacing the head gasket.

So did you get new cylinder head? My engine head gasket got replaced few days ago and my cylinder head was not replaced...so if the tech is right, then pretty soon my new gasket will fail again since the cylinder head is the same as before....Could he meant new design for head gasket??

After everything was reassembled the tech showed me the old cylinder head and the carbon deposits, and said the new one has a different design in that area*. That said, they were not going to replace the cylinder head at first, just the gasket. It was only after testing for warpage that they ordered a new head. It could be they are only fitting the new head design if the old one is warped, if it's still serviceable they may not.

*It's possible he meant the new gasket has a different design in that area but I was pretty sure he said the head. I kinda felt like I was pulling the info out of him a bit at a time with my questions. I wasn't really supposed to be in the shop, I kinda ducked in through the open service bay door to where he was reassembling everything.

After they put ours together there was an oil leak on the test drive. They determined that a gasket at the end of the camshaft was damaged and needed replacing. The work order said damaged due to the coolant leak but I suspect it also could have been due to the disassembly and reassembly. That took another week to fix, as it involved ordering the part and requesting the installation tool from another dealership.

Thanks for sharing all this great details. I am hoping that they checked mine for warpage before deciding to reuse it again:)
