Suspect the engine coolant is leaking. purchased Taos 2022 high line on 31dec2021(Canada) and I had this 'Engine coolant level low warning light is on dashboard. VW service tech filled up the coolant on July2022. But again on 7sep2022, coolant level low light showed up. next day, drove into service centre and found coolant level is low. Filled up the coolant and I am going to drop off the car at VW service tomorrow for diagnosis. Suspect the engine coolant leakage issue. Does anyone have this issue? Please share. 14000 KM into my Taos, i am not a happy customer. I got one recall and visited service centre three times. started to worry about reliability. regards, Nas
My Toas 2022 at about 17k miles was just at service for 4 months for a coolant leak on my engine block. I had my car for 1 year before any issues. Went in for normal service (my coolant light had just come on but it was due so I wasn't concerned), left with no lights and then a couple days later the light came back on. I assumed it was just human error and stopped by to have it filled. Then the light came back on a few days later again so I scheduled a diagnostic appointment. They told me it was bone dry when I showed up. They filled it and tried to send me home so I asked again for a diagnostic and then they found the problem. Needed a ton of 'specialty' parts taking months to get in. The service team told me they're getting lots of Toas drivers in for coolant issues. Well Ive had my car back for less than a week and now its leaking coolant again. I called and have to drop it back off. Hope Im not out of my car for another 4 months. I would definitely question reliability.

My wife's 2022 Taos SEL AWD had the same issue, so I took it into the dealership for evaluation. They initially told me that it might cost me to have them diagnose the issue,, but then they figured out that there was a leak which would require way more time to diagnosis, let alone fix, all of which would be covered. It's been 2 weeks since we took the car in and received a loaner for her to drive while they went thru the process to repair it. After a week and a half, the service rep called me to say that it likely won't be completely finished until this coming Monday, although there is a possibility it will be done Friday. The repair included a new head gasket, which has taken time to get from Canada, per the rep. Also, when I had it there for the initial diagnosis, the service rep said that they "are still figuring out how to work on this car with some of the more complex scenarios, as it is still pretty new to them." If you still have an issue with antifreeze leaking, I would definitely mention this to the dealer and have them evaluate the head gasket for leaks....

Hi Everyone,

Another owner with the same engine coolant issue here.

Please use the NHTSA website to file a complain so that VW starts thinking about starting a recall campaign. This is clearly a systemic issue with the car.

There are already four complaints but every single new one added brings more legitimacy to the case.

Visit NHTSA.GOV and use the file a complaint form. I only takes one minute.

Here in Canada "Transports Canada" will only receive complaints if this represents a security issue. Do you think this could be address as a security issue?

I just took mine in today. They are going to tear down the engine in mine and go from there.
I had same problem. They replaced the head gasket in December. Still were getting codes. Sent in the VW engineers, and decided it best to replace my engine. But guess what? Check engine light came on yesterday, brought into the dealership, found it has corrosion inside connector for g83 coolant temperature sensor. Ordered the parts to replace sensor and wiring harness connector with pins. I voiced my concern that the issue with the first engine started out with coolant problems. I have brought this to the attention of VW...they don't care. Can we all say Lemon?

I have added a mix of G12evo to the reservoir twice in the past year to bring the level from low up to high.

This morning, the low coolant light came on at start up. I added the remainder of the premix that I had mixed, bringing the level up from below low to high.

My odometer says 22372, owned the car for a year and a week... added a total of 1 liter of mix. Next trip to town, I need to pick up a fresh gallon of distilled water.

Hot weather will start in the midwest in a week or two... I will check the reservoir more often for the next few weeks to decide when to notify the dealership.

This Taos scares me with all the dam issues. I "was" lucky and had zero issues at 16,000+ miles BUT... Last week the Air Bag Light came on, yesterday the Low Coolant light came on just as i was leaving for a week with it. I checked it, added maybe a cup in the overflow tank and the light went off, (it was a very small amount i added so I didnt give it any thought until I read this Thread)

Then today Car Play wouldn't load properly and i was stuck on one Satellite Channel and couldn't change any Channels (that happen once before and I drove for about 4 hours without being able to change the channel). Also when this happens all my presets satellite channels go blank and your stuck on whatever satellite channel you were on when you turned it off. Later today that started working again and i'm really starting to believe that these Toas's do have a lot of issues.

Its basically a free car for me because my job gives me a car allowance so i dont get insane over it but I always pick a new SUV carefully with the thought it will never go back to the dealership period. Its not close to my house, it's always an inconvenience, i don't trust them, and there is no scenario where I can be without a car period. After reading all these horror stories there is no way it's going to them because I already know it will be a ch!t show, ill probably end up trading the dam thing in 3 years early and taking a bath but for now I do like the Taos and I will continue to dive it with the hope there are no more issues or low coolant light.

I have the same issue with my 2022 Taos. The coolant light came on. Only driven 22k. Not happy about it. Gonna go top off the fluid. Hopefully not a concern.

It is a concern. We don't have too much information on how this happens. It seems to be a bad head-gasket design/batch. We can't tell also if 2023 models are not affected since the symptoms appear after +/- 20,000 kms. This means that we'll have to cross our fingers after our 2022's are repaired, maybe we'll see this again at 40,000 kms. We'll see. It is a big deal actually since the coolant is getting into the engine's combustion chambers or worse, mixing with the engine's oil. I have never heard of a similar symptom on a 2022 Jetta. 2022 Jetta's in North America have the same 1.5 TSI EA211 Evo engine.

After us having to add coolant every month or so the dealer tested and determined there was a head gasket leak. They ordered the parts and the special tools and after a week or so they had it apart and determined it also needed a new cylinder head. Now waiting for the parts for that. The dealer has provided a new Tiguan as a service loaner.

The question I don't yet (and may never) know the answer to is whether the leak was caused by a faulty head gasket or a faulty head. The car has never overheated so there should be no reason for the head to have warped. The service advisors aren't saying a lot, although they say this is the first one they've done.

My hope is that whatever new parts get installed will address the weakness (if it is indeed a design flaw or quality control issue) and that we won't have the same thing happening in another 18 months.

My guess is that it goes more on the "design flaw" direction. Your cylinder head being warped is a very bad sign. As you said, there is no reason for the head to have warped. I see the Taos going towards the "lemon" category.

Currently having this issue. Leased in July 2021 (the VW Taos 2022). Drove it from July 2021-January 2023 without this issue (other issues ie: stalling, which we took it to the dealer twice and they told us it was literally nothing before the recall came out (cue eyeroll)). Jan 2023 (16k miles) had the warning light come on, had it towed, was told it evaporated. Not even 6 months later, having the same issue, planning on taking it to the dealer again Tuesday and kicking up a bit of a fuss, but until then, I want to just add a bit of coolant...however can't get the cap off-anyone have any tricks?

When hot, the reservoir almost has some pressure in it when removing the cap... wait until the engine is cool.

That black cap also has some ratcheting mech in it like a gas cap... and sometimes takes two hands on it to break it loose.

Yes, use more strength to take off the cap. You have to break the initial seal, then it spins off easily. It almost "clicks" into place and unclicks.
