'22 SE 4Motion, 15K miles; Low coolant indication came on several months ago. The dealer topped off the expansion tank reservoir (they said it was a nominal amount) and asked us to monitor it. The comment was made "it is not out of the question the coolant level was low from the factory".

The same indicator came on again several days ago. The coolant level in the tank was just below the low level marking. There has been no external evidence of product leakage so far. A check of the oil dip stick does not show signs of an internal leak at this time ( i.e. no coolant bubbles on the dip stick) An appointment was made and the car was dropped off at the dealer this afternoon. The Service Advisor assigned to us initially gave me the "evaporation" explanation saying "in the last ten plus years EPA mandates have lead to a change in the make up of the coolant product and it is now +/- 50% water and, therefore, it is not unusual for the cooling system to be topped off on a semi-regular basis for many cars". I noticed a small amount of coolant residue evident when the tank cap is removed. As to whether this is evidence of evaporation is another question. It may have resulted from the first refill attempt. I will let you know what we hear.

The coolant leak test is back. Score another failure of the head gasket or so it seems. The dealership is to replace the gasket and we will once again be back on hall monitor duty. Great…

“This is a new issue” according to our Service Advisor. We are only their second customer to confront this situation. Parts have been ordered. Stay tuned America.
