Google indicates that it's in the secondary display data, under Driving Data.

Your VW sales rep should have gone over this after the sale

I remember finding it through various scrolling, but it's a PITA, not simple like other cars I've owned

its pretty easy. in the HUD use the steering wheel arrows on the right side. right arrow until you get to the driving data. it shows MPG, miles since started, etc. press down/up arrow and you'll see trip in the list
