Hello!
I have an SEL-4Motion that’s barely 3k miles old. It’s been having a rattle in the sunroof somewhere, in fact if I reach up on the corner of the sunroof and poke around around the black metal frame and push a little around I can recreate all kinds of the clicking noises. The tapping/clicking noise is MUCH more prevalent with warmer temperatures but still is there when it’s cold. Secondly when it’s cold, like it is in the mountain west right now, when you warm up your car enough driving down the road you hear a loud POP, as loud as a rock hitting your windshield. Mind you this happens every time you drive the car and it’s cold (under 40°F outside).

VW keeps wanting to “inspect the sunroof” but won’t definitively replace or repair the sunroof. It just seems to be going in circles and I don’t know what I should do. Does anyone else have this issue? It’s literally driving me crazy hearing the rattle every time you drive somewhere with any bump in the road.

I couldn't figure out where this loud POP was coming from. Its the same instance for me also. Frigid Chicago temps and after driving and the car is warm I hear the Pop. Thought it was coming from the windshield but very much could be the sunroof. I will pay closer attention next time to see. But its so loud its scary.

I also have this happening in Chicago but the worst part is, I opted for NO sunroof to avoid the problem, and yet here I am sitting in the same boat as you. :( Mine sounds like it's coming from the left side of the windshield. Scares the heck out of me every time it happens. My Taos only has 500 miles so far but it's been happening since day 1.

So I listened to try to hear better where the sound was coming from and as I initially thought its the right side of the windshield. I have 2000 miles and only just stated when the cold weather hit.

Same thing happening to me up in Canada. I think it's the dash plastic popping but I'm not 100% sure. It sure does scare the bejesus out of you though. I definitely thought it was a rock hitting the windshield the first few times.

Experienced my first sunroof “pop“ the other day in -32C/-25F weather. Glad others had discussed it here. I only thought for a moment it was a gunshot!

Has any one of you figured out what's happening?

I am not sure if we had the same situation, but I have clicking noises coming from the right side of the vehicle as well. It feels like it's coming from the lower windshield/dashboard/glovebox area. It DOES happen more in colder weather! And if the weather gets a little bit warmer, the sound generally disappears! I can't replicate it when parked by knowing on the dash/door/window/etc. It only happens on colder days when driving. And it's driving me nuts.

My hypothesis is - that since the Taos were built in Mexico, and mine was built during the summer, the weather was rather warm when they put together everything. When we start getting them and using them in North America in winter, some components just started shrinking due to thermal contraction. Stuff get smaller and started rattling/moving around a bit. But I would love to find where it comes from and try to fix it so I can go back to sanity.

Went online to research this as our new Taos Comfortline with panoramic sunroof also seems to make a loud popping noise each time we drive it now that the weather has gotten colder here in Winnipeg. The first time we heard it, we thought a branch had fallen from a tree and hit the car, though with it now happening routinely after a few minutes of driving, we are convinced that the sound is emanating from some misfitting opposed parts of the vehicle itself. Like several others in this thread, the sound is a loud singular "pop", which seems to be coming from the passenger side windshield area, though I can't rule out either the dashboard or sunroof. Will keep listening for it, and will report it to my VW dealer, though suspect this will be met with little more than a shoulder shrug, so wanted to go on record here so as to bolster the notion that there is a common issue here that Volkswagen should seek to resolve.

It just got cold here in South Texas and I heard the pop for the first time a few days ago.
It seems to be coming the front passenger door. It's a loud plastic snapping noise.
Has anyone taken the door trim off to investigate where the noise might be coming from?

Same sounding noise, but mine is definitely coming from the upper windshield area, toward the passenger side, and in that it is cold here in Winnipeg on a routine basis, at least it happens consistently as the interior of the car warms up. In fact, I have now documented all 11 occurrences in the last 11 times I have driven our Taos, and even had my wife record it on her cell phone today. I will be contacting the VW dealer I purchased our Taos from and will post what their findings, and hopefully solution to this problem is, as it's frustrating to see no definitive resolution to this apparently common cold-weather issue with the Taos.

Good morning all, this is my first posting here. I came to investigate the various noises coming from my panoramic sun roof. I just recently bought my 2023 Taos, and the temperature has been around -7° — so kind of cold.

I was not aware of the loud popping issue, so I’m thankful for your comments here, I’ll certainly be watching for it and now I won’t be as scared when it happens.

I am editing this to include that I only just noticed this is for 2022 Taos, and I have a 2023. I apologize if I’ve missed posted this entry. Maybe they ‘corrected’ this issue? We’ll soon see!

My 2022 comfortline Taos with 2000 KM does same popping noise. Don’t think the cold weather has anything to do with it. It’s there since summer. I thought a rock hit my windshield first time I heard it. Mine dies not have sunroof. I will report it to dealer.

I just made a post about this issue before seeing this. My SEL makes the same kind of noise from right where the lighting assembly and controls from the sunroof are. It is a loud pop and sometimes it feels like I can feel the pop also, but probably just from how loud and jarring it can be. I want to take it to the dealer but they rarely actually fix issues that I've brought to them in the past. Hopefully a service bulletin will come up about it.

Check the thread "Popping sound from driver's side dashboard" as VW does seem to have a fix for this issue with the Taos, which is frustratingly difficult to localize (we were unsure if the "pop" ours routinely made was coming from the sunroof, windshield, dashboard, A-pillar, or rooftop control area), yet it seems relatively easy to resolve with some additional felt tape behind the A-pillar trim.
