We traded in a Golf Sportwagen on our Taos, and one of the things I immediately disliked was the hood
prop rod. The Golf had gas struts, I found a retro fit kit on Ebay, from China. It cost $60, with free shipping,
and took 2 weeks to arrive. Installation was simple and required no drilling. The hood on these cars is heavy,
and now it pops up instantly. Money well spent.

RE: FJB
I probably open my hoods on all my cars once a week. I was a BMW master mechanic for 40 years, and I do all my own work. I changed the Taos oil at 4000 miles, plus always topping up W/S washer fluid, checking oil level etc.
Apparently you don't know how to open the hood, and you just let the dealer do it......

BMW....that explains a lot. For what it's worth I spent 1.5yrs working as a Volkswagen Service Writer for Mossy VW (San Diego). I sure did pop a lot of hoods during that time. Had to deal with a lot of douche bag mechanics as well.

I can't find the part number, can you tell me the specification for the OEM gas struts? I am looking for the cheaper one.
