I have a 22 SEL taos AWD and this is my first winter with it. I've noticed that a loud popping noise comes from the sunroof area where the controls for the sunroof and overhead lighting are. It happens once a drive ever since the temperature has gotten colder, it sounds like something hitting the roof almost.

Yep. Common to VW pano roofs. Doesn’t happen to everyone but it does happen on every model with the dual pain pano. Pop also doesn’t happen in the same place for everyone.

I wouldn’tworry too much.

I wager that the loud popping noises you're hearing are coming from the windshield at one of the vehicle's A-pillars. We were unsure where what seems to have been this same noise was coming from in our Taos, and yet with our dealership's application of felt tape behind the A-pillar at the windshield body seam, the popping is now gone. Check the "Popping sound from driver's side dashboard" thread for details, as VW seems to be aware of this issue and has a fix for it.
