Rear window wavey glass

1959 Views 7 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Marco Vivolo
Has any one noticed that looking out the rear window is is like looking out of wavey (antique) glass. I have a SEL. I took it to the dealer and they first said it was a bad tint job and stated the tint is inside the glass so it could not be fixed by a third party company. They compared to another SEL and said it was the same as mine. Now they are trying to find out what to do.

If you have experienced the same issue I would like to know how it was or was not handled. I will updated when I get info.

Yes, I noticed that. It does seem to be an artifact of the (factory?) tint. I seem to remember the only other car I ever had tint on the windows looked similar. (1990 Corrado - I eventually removed it when it started bubbling!)
I mean, you could have the tint removed, but as long as it is in good shape I think I would prefer to keep it as it seems to be nicely done.
Mine is a little wavey too... Tint could play a part in the distortion but even without tint it could still be there due to the tempering process used.
I also noticed the front windshield little wavey, you have to look very closely. It could be the glass material used.

Most curved glass has some level of distortion. The tempering process and quality of materials used greatly influence the optical clarity of the finished product. That said a lot of glass is no longer made where it was, and the quality has suffered.

I wish I never read your post! I hadn’t really noticed the distortion in my rear glass. Now I can’t unsee it! LOL.

Yeah, on further inspection I agree it looks like the glass rather than the tint. I'm curious to look at the wife's Q3 when she gets home and see if it's the same.
Just rip off the rear view mirror.
