The only thing I can think of is that the car might have to vent the tank before the cap is opened. Other than opening the fuel door of course.
Preparing gas tank
Why do we get a message stating preparing gas tank when we pull the lever? Not complaining just curious.

yeah, its because of the sealed gas vapor burning system so it doesn't escape into the atmosphere. as gas is taken out of the tank, it might actually be under a little vacuum which could make it hard to take out the cap.
The 1.4T engines that the Taos engine is based on also have this.
