I bought this brand new Volkswagen Taos not even 3 months ago. I noticed these spots on the hood and top of the car. I automatically assumed it was the carwashes fault. They showed me video footage of the spots being there before entering the carwash. I took the car to the local body shop for an opinion, weirdly the spots disappear but also reappear. When the spots are present you can not wipe them away. It is not a bubble, it is just smooth. It is almost like there it is under the paint. I am not sure what makes these spots come and go. It is all very strange. Has anyone experienced this or have any idea? I have never waxed the car or washed it by hand. It is parked under a carport and is only used to travel to work and back home. I am a female that knows NOTHING about cars. Just trying to find some answers

that shows up really well in the pics, good job. getting things to show up clearly is sometimes hard in paint defect photos!

anyway, paint is a tough one. it can be paint vendor issues, application issues, local environmental issues. I have not seen that on mine but that doesn't really help your question.

most paint dmg, particularly with a new car is local environment. car port still leaves lots of local options to leave stains on the surface. they look to me that it is on the surface from the great pics. depending on your interest and comfort level, I'd try a few things.
- hand wash one of the areas with a good car soap (they are specially formulated than other home soaps), dry it so you dont have water spots (depending on your area, the rain and tap water can have lots of minerals on it that attach to paint)

- there are car products that remove minerals, road grime or sap, etc. you could try one

-go buy a very fine buffing compound meant for hand application. any autoparts store has this. follow the directions and try one of the spotted areas. these are designed to get tough to remove things off clear coat. don't 'scrub in linear motions' as it will leave an area you can notice. regular circular patterns.

or just take the car someplace that will do these for you (higher end car washes offer more specific detail services that use lots of these products).

sorry for long post.... I

Thank you for your response! The body shop owner said the spots seem to be under the clear coat. When they are there you can definitely tell it is not on the surface after you touch it. The only thing that is confusing is that the spots will just go away after awhile, but then come back. Almost like a magic trick. I have called VW and they took photos and are sending them into corporate so maybe I will get this all figured out. This is my second issue with the Taos in 2 months. The first consisted of a complete break down. It has been a very stressful time with this new car.

I guess that shows how tough it is to see paint issues in pics. that is so odd they appear to be under the clear. guess we'll see what your updates are. mine is garaged so it might not happen if its sun based

Oh I live in south Alabama, there is more than enough heat here! I have a feeling they will just need to remove the coating, that is the only solution I can think of to keep this from happening again

Just bought mine 3 weeks ago and I have the same issue spots on the hood and roof, It looks exactly like yours same color spots comes and goes away then comes back, very weird. It must be the Pyrite Silver Metallic that is having this issue. Any news on what the dealer is going to do.

Yes, they are having me bring it in on Wednesday. They are fixing it free of charge. Do not let them tell you it’s not a paint defect!

I have a 2023 Taos, and have a similar problem. The dealership actually traded me out to another new vehicle, and it also has a paint defect which could not be seen on the day I took delivery. Both vehicles are Pyrite Silver. The type of daylight affects how much the defect can be seen. Also, it cannot be easily seen if the vehicle is dirty. However, if it is overcast, the defect is an eyesore. So far, corporate is not taking responsibility for the manufacturer defect. My vehicles came from 2 different dealerships and both had the same paint defect around the emblems on the sides of the vehicle. I also saw the defect on a blue Taos that was on the lot when I went back to report the marks on the 2nd vehicle. I will not be referring anyone to purchase a VW due to lack of corporate accountability for the manufacturer defect. I would have purchased a used Taos if I wanted a vehicle with broken factory paint. I am currently being told that resolution includes a paint job on those sections of the car. That is not acceptable, since an aftermarket paint job is not cured at as high a temp. as is at the manufacturer's plant. Additionally, someone is trying to match the paint with the parts of the vehicle that won't be painted. Who knows what that will look like in several years. This is why you see some older cars on the road with one section on the car that looks faded and all the rest is nice looking. I also doubt if the aftermarket painter removes the panels and paints both sides of it, making it less likely to chip. This is not what I bargained for and I am considering arbitration and/or lawsuit.
