Hi,

For those who have done their oil change. I would like to know if the oil drain plug has to be replaced.

I have the erwin repair manuals but there is nothing there about maintenance and it only refers me to the vehicle's manual where it is written to "have all services done by a VW dealership"... lol

My Tiguan needed to have the copper gasket on the oil drain plug replaced with each oil change. I've never heard of a vehicle requiring a new drain plug with routine maintenance.
The Taos will only need to have an oil change once a year with the amount that I drive, so I will let a dealer do it.

The original washer/gasket on the drain plug is captive. You have to break it (twist it with pliers till it snaps) to remove it from the plug. You can buy the washers on their own - they have a very slightly larger hole so they fit the drain plug easily.
Or you can just get a new plug with included washer for a buck or two (more at the dealer I'm sure!).
I've done both. If you get just the washer, make sure you get a decent one and not some random thing off Ebay.

ESC tuning includes a new drain plug & washer w/ their oil change kit. IIRC the drain plug was a bit shorter than the stock one so I just reused the stock drain plug.

Drain plug is easy. It is also much better at flushing out any junk at the bottom of the oil pan than sucking it out from the top

I replace the drain plug after each oil change. This is my fourth VW. The plug itself is fine, the washer is a crush type that should be replaced after each use.. You can buy just the washers or the plugs with washers.

I thought about it but since you can't access the oil filter from the top I might as well go the old school way.
