Like everyone, I was shocked at how much brake dust appeared on the rear wheels. Keep in mind, the softer the pad, the more rotor wear will result. At 6000 miles I decided to replace the rear pads before the rotors developed a deep ridge. After measuring the used pad compared to the new ones, I'd estimate they would be lucky to last 15K miles.
Even if the dealer replaced them on warranty which is unlikely, who wants to do new pads every 15K. I picked up a
set of Raybestos Element 3 Hybrid pads which cost $22 bucks on Amazon. High quality, and after 500 miles, little
or no wheel dust, no squeal, and identical clamping force as stock pads. They were so cheap, I bought a second set of rears, plus a set of fronts too. Highly recommended.

I did my 24IR software update on Dec 7 and I can confirm the car drives better. It's not a recall, just an update. VW would never acknowledge how bad it was with a worldwide campaign (recall), but have quietly made the fix available. You'd need access to ELSA to run your vin# (VW Service Advisor does this). There is an ecu and transmission software update as well, along with the 24IR.
I got 24IR update today, what was it for? Sorry, I was not able to find much information on the update or recall. Any information is appreciated!

Well we had our 22 S in for an oil change last week and were told about the update. We were told it would take 2 additional hours and as it was 2 in the afternoon and we were waiting we held off. We also held off on the rear brakes with 4mm as the dealer wanted $560 for rear pads and rotors. We are past the extended warranty for the rear brakes so I will take care of those myself. I am confused on how an update will take 2 hours and why a car with soft rear brake pads would need new rotors at 31000 miles. I may call a different dealers service department about getting the update done. I have 4 dealerships that are about a 90 minute drive from here.

If your rotors aren't scored I seriously doubt they would need to be replaced, I would check them further, and just the rear pads are a simple swap.

I figure a good scuff with a scotchbrite should be adequate. New pads and scan tool to retract park brake arrived in the mail today. I will change them out next weekend. Knee surgery a few weeks ago has me moving a bit slower lately.
