A message intermittently appears over speedometer in a big rectangle box saying outside temperature is ____ so many degrees. And an audible ding sounds.

What gives? Anyone know how to get rid of this know how to stop this while I am driving. It’s annoying. I am driving the bad S model 4 motion. Thanks.

This is a safety related warning when the temperature is within range for icing conditions (22 - 39 degrees F).

Good to know. I couldn’t figure out why it was doing that yesterday when I was driving on the NJ Turnpike yesterday. Thanks so much. 😊

Many annoying messages will appear while you are driving. The one you speak of also includes a snowflake symbol next to your temp reading, It cannot be disabled as far as I know, sorry. In Wisconsin it comes on in the late fall and stays until spring, yes very annoying but you get used to it after a while. And speaking of annoying things what do you think of the Engine Start Stop thing?

It scared the hell out of me yesterday when the audible ding sounded and I saw it appear. I thought something was wrong. Thankfully nothing was wrong. It is very annoying but I’ll get used to it’s German quirks. Thanks for replying.

I got it for the first time yesterday when i drove up to the mountains. 70 degrees changed to high 30s. It surprised me at first too, but now aware. Was actually useful in my case as part of the mountain roads require chains and a reminder of the changing altitude and icy windy roads.

Just remember not every message means something is wrong with the car, only those accompanied by warning lamps. A good driver is a relaxed one.
The sounds it makes are different too. A "ding!" is usually just informational. A loud BEEP indicates a warning, like a problem with the car (or, irritatingly you open the door when the engine is on). A high pitched VERY-loud BEEEEEEP means it thinks a collision is imminent or you've gone unconscious (emergency assist function).

The first time I ever saw a warning for the temp outside scared me. My other car (year 2001) did the same thing - chimed loud and displayed a warning message. It was very scary the first time but after reading the message I was ok. I guess I just got use it. So this must be a german thing.

After knowing what it is - I do like the message as black ice or ice on the roads is not common here. So I'm grateful. The message only appears 1x and goes away. And I only see this at 5am in dark, as this the only time the temp here will drop that low. So for me it's nice to see.

If I was driving in snowy environment or place it's common I agree this would be annoying.

I'm seeing this message in the center of the screen and displayed on top of my overview (trip info distance, mpg, etc) (I configured my digital cockpit so I have a customized layout displayed). The message appears for a short period of time and goes away after a couple of seconds.

Agree it's a nice thing to warn of the possibility of ice or black ice (once you get used to it). I also guess it's a German car thing. I never saw it on the Mazdas I've owned or the Subarus or Hondas.

My parents' 2001 Audi A4 did the same thing, albeit on a less-impressive red LED matrix display :)
