Yup, got the letter. And the first set of rear pads had already been replaced under warranty at 16,000 km (10K miles). Hoping the second set hold up better, but the extended warranty is welcome.

I think the excessive wear of rear pads maybe due to the driver assistance/ stability systems kicking in via the ABS to help cornering etc. Or maybe the type of pad material was wrong. Seems like the letter also went to owners of Jettas and maybe other VW models as well.

Taos and probably all other VW models are rear brake biased to prevent a nose dive during breaking. What happened here is VW bought some cheap pads or their vendor used incorrect or cheap material.

I asked about mine at the last service 10k, since they are making noises I've never heard in any other vehicles such as squealing first thing when backing up, and making loud grinding noises also first few stops. They told me it due to them going to a copper free pads since they are now banned, mine are wearing fine my rear are already at 8mm at 10k and I'm all highway using ACC. They said at that time VW was replacing them beyond 12k miles since they are seeing premature wear.

So you have to wait for them to replace them after 12k miles or are they fine?

I think what Whachis29 meant is that even before officially extending the warranty on the brakes, they were doing good-faith replacements of worn brakes with more than 12K miles. After all, 12K miles is pretty fast for pads to wear out, and I guess they had realized there was a problem with the pads that had been fitted at the factory.

Got the letter last week. The next day my right rear fully failed (Jetta). Had been having some shuddering with excessive ABS application on downhill braking when cold for a little while.

But now loud scraping sounds when braking and even a mild scraping driving after release. I am afraid the right rear rotor is now warped.

I hope it’s covered under this warranty recall. It goes in tomorrow morning to be fixed.

12475 miles.
