Is this a speaker in the dash?

I’m wondering what this is in the center of the dash near the front window. Anyone know? Perhaps a center speaker?

Has anyone also notice it sometimes rattles and you kind of have to slap it to get it to stop? The rattles in the car are annoying sometimes 😅

VWs have had one of those for decades and I'm still not sure what it's for!
Pretty sure it's not a speaker. I've read reports that it is an air return and something to do with the automatic AC/heating.

It’s a speaker. Mine was rattling so bad I took the cover off and saw the speaker. I fixed the rattle by adding some double sided sticky felt pads around the edges. On another note, I have an SE and don’t believe the speaker is actually wired up.

It is the speaker for the emergency response system and is only used by Carnet if you get into an accident. It is in case the primary sound system is damaged in the accident it enables you to hear the dispatcher's instructions.
