I'm using Android Auto via a USB connection to my Moto G7 phone running Android 10.

When I touch the microphone symbol on the car infotainment display (with Google Maps running), it says something like "before I can do that I'll have to get some more information - see car notification".

There is no notification anywhere on the car that I can see, and there is none on the phone.

Anyone else run into this?

I got it working by doing a few things I found in an online search. I enabled notifications for both Android Auto and Google Maps (if they weren't already). I cleared the cache and storage for both apps. I allowed Google Maps and Android Auto to use the microphone.

When I restarted Android Auto after plugging in the USB from the car, it was like the first time I ever used AA, and there were a couple of questions it asked and I allowed whatever it was asking for.

Now it works, touching the voice button on the steering wheel lets me talk to the VW voice recognition for radio, phone calls, etc, and touching then holding the button brings up the Google assistant prompt which will let me navigate in Google Maps among other things.
