This is my 3rd post regarding an issue we're having with our phones and our Taos SEL. To begin with, phones (Galaxy S10 or S10+) pair up to the head unit, no issue there.

The issue is with the volume of the Google assistant. Volume is usable right at the start; however, if we start listening to anything (radio, podcast, Spotify... Literally any audio source from the phone), the Google assistant volume resets to a low volume, and can't be adjusted up. Doesn't matter if you use the knob or the steering wheel controls, all you are affecting is the audio volume, not that of the Google assistant.

I've tried anything I can think of, and nothing works. I feel like I've run through every developer option, every Bluetooth setting.... And nada.

I've also contacted VW directly and worked extensively with the local dealer and got nothing less than a "yup, there is a problem, sux to be you, sorry but no ETA on a fix". Thankx VW, first dieselgate, now this (former owner of a JSW TDI).

I have 2 questions to the collective:

-any of you seeing a similar issue? With acknowledgement of the issue by VW, I'd expect to see other folks on the forum with similar complaints.

-roll call for those of you that are NOT having an issue like I described above...... What Android phone are you using? I don't have a problem buying a new phone, just as long as I could reasonably presume that it will fix the problem. Haven't changed out these phones because after all these years, they still work like new!

This issue has totally soured my wife on the car at this point. One of the selling points was this integration, which is table steaks among car manufacturers today, IMHO. I mean, my 2019 Jeep GC is flawless in its AA implementation, and I just assumed that this wouldn't be an issue with any manufacturer today in 2022.

I just expected better from VW.... This is our 3rd VW, and the ownership experience so far has been the worst. I could possibly make things better with a new phone for the missus..... Then perhaps we could move on to addressing the cabin squeaks, but that's an issue for another thread.

Thanks in advance for the help.....BTW, coolwalk is verrrry nice!

I've noticed there are times the head used to randomly change the volume mode away from radio and to phone. difference in icon when using the vol key on the wheel. that went away with some update.

i've got a s20 5g and it works great with the car. I don't use it for pod casts or music because we have a 64gb usb with loads of music in one of the C ports. The phone notifications seem to stay at specific volume though. do't know if the version of droid, version of BT in hardware or version of droid car on the phone would help solve your issues. but an older device does tend to limit the versions overall.

wish that was more help

I also has a Samsung S10+ and I have that exact issue. One minute I'll be listening to music on Spotify then I get a text and I tap on the text to have it read aloud to me so that I can focus on driving and it is at such a low volume that I just end up having to open my phone to look at the text because I can't understand a word that is said. It's been a pain but I can get by without it but another issue I have almost every time I connect to Android Auto is that it randomly disconnects my phone a few minutes after initially connecting so that all my music and navigation stops entirely. When this happens I usually just keep trying to reconnect it but a lot of the time it just will not connect back so I'm stuck without music till I restart my phone which fixes the issue most times. Hope these issues can get fixed.

Yes I have witnessed this issue in my 22 Taos. I have a S21+ and I believe it be part of the android auto app. Everytime I get a rating or questionnaire from the app, I rate it poor and then write up the issue. Maybe if everyone does this, they will fix it. My wife has an iPhone in her 22 Tiguan, and doesn't have the issue. That's why I think it's an android auto app issue.

Here is my experience.. there are two volumes. One for radio, etc, one for Google assistant. Both are controlled by the same volume button/knob. You can only adjust the volume for Google assistant while Google assistant is speaking. Try making the assistant speak then adjusting the volume while you are hearing the assistant.

Ya that does not work either. Its some software issue on the car. It's not recognizing that it's voice when music from the phone is playing as well it can't separate it.... Pretty annoying that you need to switch to radio then back to AA and then listen to a text.... Need a patch ASAP

thanks schimmy and all that have responded.

It's definitely the car. Have tried this with 4 phones so far (samsung S10, S10+, S23, Pixel 7Pro). Even showed this in action to the dealership. It's very repeatable.

I think that it was a recent update to AA because I've had my 2023 SEL for about six months and this just started happening. And yes, as mentioned, the two volumes thing used to work but no longer does. I need to try wired though...
