Hello folks,

Long time VW owner here, but I am looking at a new 2023 Taos Highline 4M to update an older VW.

I have been reading a lot in the last couple of days, about all of the recall issues, and other complaints for this new Taos. It did occur to me (in an effort to be fair), that a lot of the posts are from a year or so ago, and that a lot of the cars involved would have been earlier 2022's. It also occurs to be that most people only take to the internet forums to broadcast their displeasure with something, and far less often to share their sheer delight in something.

My question is, as the cars have been in production longer now, has the number and type of complains improved, particularly with the 2023's?

I drive a lot for work, and have an hour commute each way. I cant afford to be without car for periods of time. I drive mostly in Southern Ontario, Canada.

Any feedback is appreciated

Would the majority of you buy another Taos?

Thanks in advance !

I got a 2023 Taos few weeks ago.

It was the only new car without a wait time and I couldn't wait (Ontario as well).

There are no real faults in the car that bother me, but here are the few drawbacks:

* The front assist once forced my car into an emergency stop over a piece of paper that flew by. It happened only once but this can be a serious safety concern.

* At the traffic light, the engine stops, and the fan start blowing cold air immediately. Not sure if its normal or not.

* Fuel consumption is worse than the promises, but I drive mostly in the city. Also they say not to measure fuel consumption in the first 1000km so maybe that is why.

* The rear camera is one of the cheapest shittiest cameras I have ever seen in 2023. But it does the job.

Other than that, no real complaints.

I have a 2023 Taos S (Base model) with 4Motion and have over 4K miles on it.

The only 2 "issues" so far seem minor:
1) The front assist has deactivated at least 5 times so far due to "obstruction' of the sensor but resolves itself on the same day in under an hour or less.
2) There is a build-up of brake dust on the rear wheels, but we have received a letter from VW regarding extended warranty for the rear brake pads. It sounds like the Taos came with crappy rear brake pads. I might go ahead and just get the rear break pads replaced with ceramic ones before 10K hits to avoid having my brake rotors getting ruined.

Otherwise, no other issues so far. I got the Base S model as it was comparable to the my previous mid-level trim Subaru. Plus, the less tech the better for me as it also means there will be less that will go wrong. For the price of a mid or top-level trim Taos (in the US, SE or SEL), I would rather get an Audi instead.

Another pro is that the 2023 is not part of the 24IR update, but the DSG transmission did take a little getting used to and feels smooth and refined to me. I did have an Audi in the past, and it felt familiar.

Finally, since this if my first VW, I did not realize the windshield wiper blades could not be raised unless it was placed in "service mode!" Not really an issue, but seems to be a quirk for VW.

I think it was very disappointing that many had issues with the 2022 first year model. Although it has been around since 2018 in China under the Tharu name, you would think they've already ironed out all the kinks! But experience has taught me to never buy a 1st year model.

I have a 2022 SE, owned for about 15 month with 20K on it.
Very happy with the car with no major issues so far.
Backup camera was mentioned above to be crappy. I have to disagree. Reasonable resolution. Well it does not have active guidance lines but not all cars have it either. The driving from stop gets a bit of time to get used to for the driver.
Someone mentioned about lane assist/ACC gets deactivated. Yes as it is clearly mentioned in the manual it will not work on certain situations. It happened to me in snowy condition ( condensation/snow blocking the sensor which is hidden behind the VW badge).Again, happens with other cars.
Nice handling and ride feel for a subcompact SUV( I downgraded from a 13 BMW 335 xi M sport package:)).
I am 6'5" and I do think this the roomiest subcompact SUV that you can find. Back seat adult passengers and me all seat very comfortably.
Lots of hard plastic inside, true but this is not supposed to be a luxury car, so not much complaint there. I like its simple functional interior design though.
The wireless Android auto/apple car play works smoothly.
I like the travel assist and use it a lot.
Again my car didn't have any issues but as you can see it has not been the case for every owner.
If you are thinking about resale value, it is not going to be like Japanese cars for sure....

2023 SE AWD, 1500 miles. Amazing experience so far.
Pros:
  1. visibility from driver position and level of comfort is excellent for me
  2. "Travel Assist" is amazing, handling curves without issues. Reacts to sudden stops of car in front of me much quicker than I am.
  3. fuel economy was huge surprise for me
Cons:
  1. Windshield wipers can scratch the hood. I just did it without any force applied. Felt so stupid.

You have to activate the service mode first before moving the windshield wipers, otherwise it will scratch the hood
