How were you alerted?
Through the infotainment center. it was optional but I went ahead and did it.

It's a 2 stage process, 1st download... then install. Install takes approximately 30 minutes and you cant use the car while its happening.

After the download it asks you, when you shut off, if you'd like to proceed with the install. So I waited until I knew I wouldn't need the whip for at least an hour.

Was also alerted via Car-Net app but no details as to what was part of the update.

My VIN is eligible for it according to the VW site, but I checked for updates on the infotainment today and there was none, so I wonder if I just have to wait for it to be actually pushed to the vehicle.

It appears you must have Car-Net enabled:

If you’re unsure if your vehicle qualifies for a software update or have not received a notification because you are not registered for Car-Net, we have a look-up tool available. Simply enter your vehicle identification number (VIN) to view any open campaigns, including software updates available, and contact your dealer for next steps.

NOTE: Your vehicle needs to meet certain conditions for the update to work. The green light on the 3-button module in your overhead console must be on and your vehicle needs to be in a location with sufficient network connectivity. If your software update cannot run over the air, please visit your local Volkswagen Dealer who can update the software in person.

At the bottom of this page. Recall / Service Campaign Lookup

Also I have car-net and still haven't gotten any notifications about it so I don't think it's that. It's probably a rolling rollout (lol)
Yeah this is kind of messed up, download and update done and confirmed be infosys and Car-Net, but entered the VIN in the look up tool and it Ella me it needs updating and to take it to dealer. Systems are not communicating with each other.

No, it’s not meant to.
That tool tells you if your vin is on the list of vins for each recall. That’s all.

The main reason the software has to be updated is because the backup camera software is so bad that it blacks out and freezes, which is a minor safety issue. My Jetta camera stutters and once in a while it just shows black. But the update also update also improves overall performance of the system.

For me the update:
Made CarPlay much much more responsive
Fixed the black infotainment screen issue
Fixed audio over CarPlay sometimes not working
Fixed an old cached GPS location making the map think it was in the wrong place

It would be nice to get release notes. And most updates these days are rolled out in phases in case something goes horribly wrong so may take some time for it to appear for you.

Overall the update has been a really good bug fix for multiple issues.

I'm thinking they may have done it when I brought it in a few weeks ago for a couple small issues (or things I thought were issues) I called today though and the service advisor had absolutely no idea what I was talking about, and suggested I just bring it in.

I agree! I want to see whats new!

I just got the message this morning about the update, and I'm pretty bummed out it doesn't tell you what the new update will bring.

Is this possibly a staggered rollout? VIN Lookup indicates there is an update available. Oddly, listed in red on the update page, it says "Repair Required". I have not received notification through Car-Net as of yet. I only have the basic features in Car-Net and am not subscribed to extra services. Wonder if that matters as far as getting a notification?

Thanks @jLokes. Any idea as to whether this is a staggered rollout or not? I'm 265 miles from my dealer and didn't see the need in having to set up an appointment if it came through Car-Net.
not sure about the roll out, if I do a MENU/SETTINGS/SYSTEM INFO via infotainment I get a software version #0813. What # are you guys seeing here? Initially, after the update, when I entered the VIN with the aforementioned online look up tool it said I needed an update and to check with the dealer. That message no longer appears when I run the VIN. I suspect that this update is infotainment only and has nothing to do with the ECU but really have no idea.
